A huge graphic for its day, this image required massive color-indexing (to compress the file size) and a “preloader” page (to get as much into cache as possible.) Quirky web design tricks to be sure, but it allowed the use of large graphics on a website, practically unheard of in those low bandwidth dial-up days. See here for the story.
