Software logos - GTech Innovative Software Solutions.
Behind the Design Scenes: If the overdone visual 'cliche' of the nineties was the so-called globe and swoosh logo, the 'gel' or 'chrome' treatment runs the risk of becoming the overused 'fad' of the current decade (running neck and neck with drop 'shadows'). While this technique was made famous by Apple, it was been around for a while. Having said that, it remains a technique that can still add an interesting dimension to any logo - especially those for firms and consultants in the hi-tech sector.
Case in point - the logo for GTECH Software Development and Consulting (above). Creating a logo of this nature comes with a few caveats - the project must began as vector based artwork (without a vector based version of your logo, you'll have all sorts of issues in the future - scalability, adding your logo to various backgrounds, color changes, etc). This factor has became an issue of late - many so-called DIY web sites that offer $50 logos only supply bitmap or pixel formats and while the discount logo pricing is certainly attractive, the headaches that this kind of artwork represents far out weigh the advantages.
Another thing to consider when using 'gel' type logos - they're actually just designs that use blended colors to achieve a 'shaded' appearance - is color. If not developed correctly, your brand may cost a fortune to reproduce. Or you may not be able to match the colors at all due to RGB and CMYK issues. Despite appearing full color - the above design consists of only two spot colors which makes any marketing material economical to print. Another of the many reasons we always recommend that you utilize an experienced designer, or logo design companies with 'stones', when developing your new corporate identity.
