Behind the Design Scenes: Sometimes the creative direction of a brand development project is pretty well preordained. There really isn't any other choice. An example? Well, let's take a company - say Eagle Software. In order to be clever, we could put a fire truck in their design, but there wouldn't be much point. People would always be commenting - "nice fire truck, but where's the eagle?" as our ever-so-clever design zooms over their head. Guess the point we're trying to make here is this - sometimes the simplest, most obvious solution is the best one. Conversely, being clever for clever's sake, runs the risk of creating a logo that is neither memorable, or on-topic. In reality the logo for Eagle Software screamed out for an eagle icon (not a fire truck). But before you run out to grab all the clip art or logo templates you can find on eagles, here's a caveat; while the logo icon may be obvious, the execution of the design cannot be. It must have a different treatment, or your new logo runs the risk of looking like clip art (shudder). The icon for Eagle Software was worked up through a series of preliminary sketches resulting in the simple graphic design logo you see here. It is in the 'cropping' of the image that makes the icon truly unique. Computer 'bugs' were added in order to tie the graphic in when the company's activities. A simple sans-serif logo font rounded off the design. Designed at the height of the 'globe and swoosh' phenomenon, this logo featured a design style that was remarkably restrained.
