Behind the Design Scenes: Sometimes a logo project begins with a simple brainstorming session in our studio lounge. These sessions go something like this; When you think of California, what comes to mind? Palm trees. Sunsets. Fair enough. Now, how would we work these images into a logo for a startup software company? Well, if you're a designer at The Logo Factory you might design something like we preview here - a large 'C' sunset, outlining several distorted palm trees. The font for California wasn't a custom treatment, but an off-the-shelf typeface (used with some caveats) - the spacing had to be had manually kerned due to some spacing issues (many company letter combinations have spacing issues that have to be overcome. It's not important that the letter forms are equally spaced - which is how most design software handles type - but it IS important that the letter forms appear or be equally spaced. This requires someone with experience in typography and font handling). All in all, a fairly decent design that still stands up pretty well.
