About: Logo design for a licensed private investigator that performs video surveillance and private investigation for high-end law firms.
Logo Brief: in the initial project brief, the client indicated in no uncertain terms that they'd really "like" a trench coated character, straight our of the cinema - suggested visual references included such movie icons as the Exorcist poster, Elliott Ness, Humphry Bogart, etc. What the client didn't want was a cartoon logo featuring a comical gumshoe - their business, and legal firm clientele were very much on the serious side, sometimes deadly so.
Rather than develop a recognizable character, our designers opted to create a figure that was hidden in the shadows, a silhouette really, and keeping with the original project scope. Throughout the creative process, the private investigator icon remained pretty much the same, though we toyed with logo aspect ratios (horizontal & vertical) until we arrived at the version you see here. The logo was kept to a two-color palette for control, as well as economy of printing when it came to various marketing efforts.
Letterhead design - When it came to the stationery design portion of the project (see above) the letterhead, business card and envelope where kept fairly simple, as to not compete with the central icon, and to avoid looking gimmicky or amateurish.
