Logo Brief: Canada based Links Clothing Store were looking for a truly multipurpose logo. The design had to work in various uses and applications:
1) The primary purpose of the logo - to work as a corporate brand for the Brampton stores themselves. The logo was to be used on all the standard marketing and business materials - letterhead design, stationery design, web site and more. In addition, the logo had to work on the retail store signage - an often overlooked factor in design setup, especially when an inexperienced designer is involved in a project of this nature. Most retail store signs are horizontal (often with a 3 to 1 aspect ratio) and this MUST be taken into consideration when preliminary roughs are created. In the case of the Links store logo,this aspect ratio was known from the get-go, so for any store sign use the star was designed in such as way that it could be removed without major impact on the design. We also utilized a simple, extended font so that the logo could stand as a unique brand without the star icon.
2) The logo was also to be reproduced on all the items that make up the branded logo clothing that is manufactured and designed by the chain. In addition to established brands, Links carries their own in-house logo T shirts, so the design needed to work both in silk-screen and embroidery reproduction. The simplicity of the logo was once again an issue - for use on apparel, it needed to reproduced as a full chest print (approx. 11" wide) as well as a breast print (generally approx. 3" wide) so the design needed to be simple enough to reproduce at various sizes. The logo was also to be used on hats, so needed to be simple enough to embroider, without high stitch counts and complicated digitizing. The logo also needed to utilize solid colors (no screens) as to minimize reproduction complications, and subsequent costs. The logo can be adjusted however, to a two color version (using screens) for traditional reproduction and print.
