How we create a logo - Newbury Trading Company design.
Client: Newbury Trading.
Design Category: Schooner, Boat
About: Logo design for Newbury Trading - a Newburyport, Massachusetts based trading and distribution company.
Logo Brief: To create a logo for this client, Newbury Trading Company, we first took stock of their creative brief. Nebury were looking for us to create a design featuring a 'New England feel' and incorporating a old trading schooner from the 1700's. The client did not want a 'screaming logo' but a more elegant and subdued treatment for their import, export and distribution company. After spending a few minutes on Google, our designers were able to find several reference photographs of appropriate trading ships for reference, and after creating a vector logo version, added the Newbury Trading name in fairly conservative type. The client was concerned about the cost (who isn't?) of using an illustrative logo, but those concerns were quickly alleviated by our staff.
By effective placement of blends and tones, our designers were able to create a fairly illustrative logo, complete with tonal variations the schooner's sails, while maintaining a two color design. Known as spot-color reproduction, this is an effective way to control costs when traditional reproduction is utilized for every day items such as letterhead design, stationery design, presentation folders and more. Unfortunately, these options are not available with many logo design formats that are often turned over by less experienced designers, including logos created by the various so-called logo 'design' software packages and other logo design companies.
