About: Logo design for Corner Cravers - a web site dedicated to online car racing and high-performance autosports sales.
Logo Brief: When it comes down to creating a logo for any type of specialist, - especially a sports enthusiast - accuracy is a must. Products that are featured in the logo must be 'bang-on' - a true zealot (especially auto racing fans) will the first to point out a logo's deficiencies.
For examples - A few years ago, a competing logo design firm (no names mentioned - just think L & W) developed a logo for a scuba diving store, which naturally featured a diver in full gear. Trouble is, the designer 'flipped' the reference photograph so that the diver's snorkel ended up on the wrong side of his mask. It wasn't until business cards, catalogues and sales sheets where printed, did the error get pointed out - over and over again. Accuracy is a must if your logo is to feature anything even remotely illustrative (and this also explains why illustrative logos tend to be more expensive that their simpler iconic versions).
Such was the case with auto sport sales company Corner Cravers, who supplied the specs for the two cars they wanted to include. A late model Firebird and Corvette were rendered into simplified halftones so that the finished design would remain a 2-color logo (more economical printing costs.
The logo brief was very simple - "Depiction of 2 exaggerated race cars (Firebird and Vette) racing around the a corner or a road race course. Low to the ground, showing fast movement, smoking tires, etc."
