About: A logo design for We Care Pharmacy, a Minneapolis based pharmacy, drug store and health care chain.
Logo Brief: It doesn't happen often, but there are rare occasions when even the most veteran designer falls into a successful logo quite by accident. Here's a case in point - the We Care Pharmacy logo. We started the project with the expected (and client requested) logo image - the time honored mortar and pestle, almost a prerequisite for a drug store logo. Many medical imagery is consistent (see the upcoming caduceus example) and despite desires to be 'different' and 'unique', certain logo categories almost demand arguably cliché approaches. We designed a nifty mortar and pestle and combined it with a font treatment that met the project mandate - easy to read, reproducible on signage, and large enough to be read by the elderly.
We took a very simple, bold approach (VER 1) and designed many variations based upon the same theme. The client liked the direction, and we even went as far as to mock up light boxes (VER 2).
It wasn't until The Logo Factory designers were discussing the week's projects, did we realize that one of the versions (VER 3) resembled an apple, shaped like a heart. Now that worked! An apple (keeps the doctor away) and the heart imagery combined was perfect for a pharmacy, and did, in fact, avoid the cliché mortar and pestle logo treatments so common in today's landscape.
Our designers quickly worked up some revisions in a dry brush technique, added appropriate typography, and presented to the client. They was a thrilled with the new direction as we were, and the project ended up with the successful logo featured as today's Daily Logo (this project is also featured as part of our TLF Classics logo gallery).
