About: A corporate logo design for My Auction Source - a company that sells client's items through online auctions such as Yahoo, MSN, ebay.
Logo Brief: Using an illustrative logo treatment in your logo can be quite effective and can allow your brand to tell a story about your company, product or service. An illustrative logo, however, comes with a unique set of caveats that it usually requires a skilled designer to pull off. The design needs to be simple enough to reproduce well on a wide variety of media, yet elaborate enough so that it doesn't run the risk of appearing like 'clip art'. Such a logo can be terrifically unique and stand out dramatically in the crowded marketplace.
Such is the case with the My Auction Source logo featured above. The client always wanted a swinging auction gavel, using a computer monitor as a base, and it was decided early into the project that a fully rendered version was the only way to go. Our designers created a simplified illustration, and combined it with a wide angle view to create visual impact. The red orbit, and blue shadow adds to the sense of movement. To complete the logo, a complementary italic font was selected.
Despite the apparent detail, this design can be reproduced as a two color logo. This makes traditional reproduction (letterheads and business cards) more economical than quality process reproduction. In other uses, the screens and tints make the logo appear as a full color version.
