About: Logo design for Molly's Smokehouse - an existing Texas Style BBQ restaurant that features southern entree's and side dishes. Molly's specializes in pure methods of cooking - fresh ingredients, hardwoods for smoking, signature dry rubs and BBQ sauce. Planned decor will be Texas themed combining an atmosphere of Blues, Brews, and BBQ. The logo will be used for packaging and bottling of signature products and sauces.

Logo Brief: This project was actually more of a logo clean up, as Molly's Smokehouse already had an existing brand. As is often the case, the artwork wasn't the best solution to begin with, and over the years had become dated. Changing a logo once established has some drawbacks, but Molly's wanted to tackle the project as part of their entire restaurant makeover. The client didn't want to stray too far from their original mark (below) and were adamant that they didn't want a mascot logo featuring traditional characters.

During initial consultation it was undecided whether or not to add the 'Smokehouse' portion of the logo or not. Most of the clientele had already dropped it and referred to the restaurant as simply "Molly's" so it could be argued that the 'Smokehouse' was redundant. After much debate, it was decided to keep the tag as it didn't take away from the design, and helped establish what Molly's was all about. The BBQ smoker was based on an actual unit (illustrations that feature any kind of equipment must be accurate. Aficionados are the first to point out inaccuracies, regardless of how small). Over the years, many had opined that it was difficult to identity the smoker in the original logo, so this was a priority with the client.
