boat logo copy

The used, abused and overused boat logo gets entered into yet another logo design contest

boat logo originalThe few regular readers of our blog will know that we’ve had a running battle with logo contests and the repeated inclusion of our Euro Yacht boat logo (left) into any contest to do with water, boats and marinas. Happens so much, it’s a bit of a running joke around the studio and the subject of many a blog post (but a worthwhile lesson on the truth about logo design contests and the risk of creative crowdsourcing). We even added the design to a page that illustrates all this in our copycats section, ironically where people are now lifting the image from. Well, it’s happened again, this time our little boat icon finding it’s way into a $200 logo design contest on Logosauce (they hold design contests too?!!) One small change – this iteration is decked out in Stars and Stripes glory. Spiffy.

Luckily (for the contest holder) this one was caught out in the comment thread before we had to write the usual “hey, you may not know this but…” e-mail.

    Steve,

I am writing a paper on the negative impact crowd sourcing design has on the Graphic Arts profession( as well as the harm it could present to companies.)Basically my paper is designed to deter a CEO from resorting to crowd sourcing ( design.)I have found your posts on the subject very useful and informative, also I couldn’t agree with you more.I am planning to properly cite two of your blogs as my professor gave me the green light despite these bieng blogs. However, I would like to know if I could also include your ” TanningFactory” and “Storm Factory” images as an example of how advanced copyright infringement really has become?

Hi Angie – Feel free to include anything you want in your paper. If I can be any further assistance, feel free to contact me through the contact form on the site.

It saddens me to see this happen to you guys repeatedly, it just shows how good you guys are at the same time it is entertaining to see how stupid and desperate so called designers are for stealing your work.

  3. Angie says:

    Thank you!

  4. DonZilla says:

Good grief Steve, I can’t believe you guys are still fighting this but it all has to do with the dumbing down and democratization of our industry. I can’t wait until they democratize brain surgery, that should be fun to watch.

Thank you for supporting originality and expertise.

And Angie, it’s great that you’re doing a paper on this subject, but try to double check your spelling and punctuation. Sheesh.

incompetent businesses still use stolen logos designed by competent people. what does that tell you about these businesses and the simple minded people that run them? oh the poor boat. if they are willing to use a stolen logo…they have no problem selling stolen product.

in the earlier days people got paid to brainstorm for the betterment of the company and/or its clients. these days they milk the ‘simpleton’ generation for vague ideas and combine them to make great ideas for profit. from paid brainstorming to free ‘simpleton’ crowd sourcing. ha! crowd sourcing, in my opinion should be known by its true name ‘sucker-sourcing’. one lucky person gets a few grand and the unknown company gets hundreds and sometimes thousand of ideas for future reference. way to go idiots. if Edison, Da Vinci and others were of our time, they would do little better than minimum wage. ‘There’s a sucker born every minute’ could not be more true than this age of global access.

it has more or less 80% similarity with the Euroyacht Logo.
but nevertheless, the fiberglass logo is great too.
