Branding for a church or other religious organization ain’t the easiest task in the world. Most projects start off with the creative brief “we don’t want three crosses on a hill like everybody else” which slowly dissolves throughout the design process until we’re left with, well, three crosses on a hill. And we can probably throw in a dove for good measure. That’s not to say that all church logos suck, some are actually pretty good. Case in point – this list of the Top 20 Church Logos. Not sure what the criteria was, or who was doing the judging, but there’s some pretty nice stuff featured. Around the shop we’ve done a few church logos of our own, and if memory serves, we’ve got a few in-house as I write this. And while we’re talking about branding churches and religious groups, The Tennessean ran an article yesterday – Churches search for best brand – detailing how many religious folks are starting to understand the value of marketing their particular, ahm, brand of religion. Also includes a few tips from an advertising agency specializing in brand development for religious organizations.
