The Learning Channel has recently trotted out their new logo though I’d argue that the logo’s not so much a new mark – more of a re-working of the TV channel’s regular identity (there are some very real advantages of not straying too far afield from an established corporate identity). The three color fields are still present, as is the channel’s TLC acronym.

The tagline ‘life unscripted’ has been tanked in favor of an arguably more appropriate ‘live and learn’. The old serif TLC has been reworked with with a sleeker, rounder sans serif. Alas, The Learning Channel has also joined the legions of companies now using the ‘gel’ effect in their logos (damn you Apple) which is pretty cool now, but in a few years who knows (remember the ‘swoosh’ deal from the 90′s?). In any case, the new logo is definitely an improvement on the older version – much more modern and (one supposes) web friendly for the younguns. Despite the recent ‘overkill’ of ‘geltastic’ logos, I like the depth and 3D logo quality of the new logo, the tagline is much more to the point and visually integrated. (some might complain that the itty-bitty font may cause some reproduction issues on smaller uses – it does, on the other hand, look fine in a relatively small image size shown above).

Overall, a thumbs up…
