I usually spend Sunday mornings booting around the Internet while sipping on a hot coffee with the dogs curled at my feet. News. Forums. The latest blog feeds. Sometimes, I’ll even perform some random Google searches for logo design related subjects. In one of these searches, I found this beauty:

Yep, it’s an official ‘Terrorist Buster’ logo from the good folks at the CIA (above left). Besides the fact that this is a awfully executed logo; the details will get lost in smaller use, the contrast of those details is lacking to begin with and the bevel, glow and drop shadow filters are working overtime – I’d also argue that this logo is woefully inappropriate for such a deadly subject. It’s very difficult to get taken seriously when your terrorist baddy is waving his AK-47 (at least, I think it’s an AK-47) from behind a ‘universal no’ symbol. The little terrorist dude ends up being more comical than frightening. No – this isn’t a new logo, apparently this has been around since December 2001, but the atmosphere back then was more somber, not less. I’d also point out that if you want to be taken seriously, it’s best not to model your logo after a 1970′s comedy – Ghostbusters no less (the original movie logo and tagline line featured as an inset). And lest you think I’m making this up, you can seen the logo on the official CIA web site.
