Oh Bill. Can’t the MSN boys just improve their own wonky search engine? From CNN MoneyMicrosoft bids $45 billion for Yahoo. MSN Search, trailing behind front runners Google & Yahoo, has apparently been in talks with Yahoo for 18 months and made the official offer early this morning. If the deal goes through, it would certainly shake up the SE Landscape –

A Microsoft-Yahoo combination would create a powerful number two player in the online search business, which Google commands. The leading search engine reigns over 58.4% of the U.S. search market, while Yahoo has 22.9% and Microsoft’s share is just 9.8%, according to comScore, a research firm that tracks Internet traffic.

This comes at a time when there appears to be a shakeup in the SE industry. Google’s shares are down (still, at over $700 a pop, still pretty healthy) while Yahoo recently announced the lay-off of over 1,000 employees. How the borging of Yahoo by Microsoft would effect all this remains to be seen.
