Adobe launches free Photoshop service

And graphic designer’s heads explode all over the internets (or they might, having plonked down $1000s over the years for Adobe’s premier image app). Ah well, guess it had to happen sooner or later, with free photo and image manipulation software nipping at Adobe’s stranglehold on the market. Known as Photoshop Express (you can try out the Beta version here) the free version runs on the Flash 9 plug-in, is offered as a registered service (along with 2 GBS of storage) and promises to support all sorts of formats in the future (currently Photoshop Express only works with .jpgs). Guess the design software giant decided to hack into their own revenues before some upstart had a go. I’m wondering how long before Illustrator shows up? No word about that, but Adobe promises more premium features at some later point, including online printing services, more storage space and support for audio and other media. There’s also plans in the works to build an offline client, which will probably drive the retail of the full-blown Photoshop down.
