Generally, I’m skeptical about any site offering free logos. Usually just come SEO come on for do-it-yourself flash logo generators where you can assemble some pre-fab clip art for free, but have to pay to actually use the logo (the purpose of the exercise in the first place). New outfit Logoinstant.com seem to be on the up-and-up, offering what they refer to as ‘free web 2.0 logos’ via their new site. Most of the files are available as Photoshop formats, while others are available as Adobe Illustrator files as well. No registration is necessary for access to any of the free stuff, and visitors are welcome to rate and/or comment on same.
No substitution for originality (some of the designs have been downloaded several thousand times) but worthwhile I suppose for someone in need of a quick fix (with the usual caveats about discount logos). While the logos are free, Logo Instant features some terms of service that prohibit certain uses such as wider distribution or on ‘for sale’ goods such as T-shirts (all fair enough, but not sure how the owners of the site can police such restrictions). Won’t be terribly surprised when the offered free works start showing up on design crowdsourcing sites and as entries into logo design contests. And while using these free logos for your own use – a personal blog let’s say – is cool, it wouldn’t surprise me at all if some so-called logo designers start foisting these free logos off in paid gigs or as samples in their logo design portfolio. At the risk of sounding bitter, such is the nature of the online logo design business these days. Oh yeah – should probably use this opportunity to pimp our Morgue Files – our own free logos section
