Original and 'inspired' version

Booting around the tubes this morning, and ended up at yet another discount logo design site, this time going under the name of Storm Logos (oooh, very ‘brandy’). Under a tagline of Creativity meets Affordability, they promise all sorts of other design goodies, including your new logo designed for $75.00, unlimited revisions (a somewhat nebulous concept – see here for the myth of unlimited revisions) and ‘completely original vector art‘. Ironic really, since one of the logos in their gallery (see here) is a carbon copy of one of our classic logos – Eagle Software – that’s been on our site for eons now (compare here).

Hardly ‘Creative’ or ‘Original’.
While I generally like to give everybody the benefit of the doubt, this does raise a couple of possibilities. Best case scenario – we’ve got a bunch of novice pixel pushers fudging their credentials by showcasing other folks’ work as fictional projects. Worst case? We’ve got some poor unsuspecting security company who, after parting with seventy-five bones (what a bargoon!) are now happily slapping a logo they don’t own, on everything they do.

Some of you might ask what exactly do I expect for seventy-five bucks? A little ‘Creativity’ perhaps – just as advertised. Certainly not retreads, or as in this case – complete knock-offs – from other peoples’ work. I’ve emailed the good folks at the site to see what the 411 is, and I’d imagine that the logo will be gone by the time you read this. As a purely pragmatic exercise, this also serves to further illustrate why trusting any clown you run into on the interwebs to create your new corporate identity, based on bargain-bin-pricing alone, is Not. A. Good. Idea.

It’s a jungle out there…

Update: As predicted, the logo’s been yanked, along with a spiffy e-mail explaining the, ahm, ‘situation’.

‘Straightened out’ you say. Can’t wait.
