NewsWell, not just yet – but it might be. Or perhaps more accurately, there may be no excuse for, ahm, inadvertently copying a logo because a designer ‘didn’t know’ a similar brand existed somewhere else (the fave excuse for busted copycats). At least if South Africa based Superlogos has their way. The Cape Town web outfit is about, they claim, to release a new logo-based search engine, Super Logos World which, if it operates as advertised, will allow users to search for various logos and brands by keyword and image search. Still early days though. The website is not functional at present (press release jumped the gun a little, I guess) and the initial rollout will be localized for South Africa. We’re promised plans to move into Europe, Asia and North America in the not too distant future. Course, this sort of thing has always been around (the US Patent & Trademark Office has an online search tool) but most have been pretty cumbersome and a pain to navigate. (USPTO links & more trademark resources here). I wish these Super Logos guys well – it’s an idea that if it works, could save logo designers a lot of searching time…
