Netscape LogoSad really. AOL has announced that it’s pulling the plug on the Netscape browser. Veterans of the Internets will remember Netscape as the browser-o-choice when the Web first started to get traction back in the mid-ninties (just about the time we were getting our start). It was a better alternative to Uncle Bill’s Explorer, and for a few years was the king of the brower hill. Alas, some severely messed marketing strategies hampered Netscape’s domination. Then Explorer finally got with the program (ie: free downloads) and upstarts like Firefox and Safari helped to finish off Netscape’s market penetration. To be honest, I thought Netscape already was a thing of the past (personally, haven’t used it in years). The Business Week article also served to remind me of the days when the Toobz were a much friendlier place (ie: no spammers). Sad to see it go.
