Good gawd, I’m really starting to really, really, really hate spam (actually, hated it for years – just getting around to ranting about it now) and of course – the spammers themselves. At The Logo Factory, we get tons of e-mails from clients all over the world and in order to avoid ‘false positives’ on our spam filters (where certain key word algorithms ‘trip’ a spam filter and an e-mail is trashed even though it’s a legit message) we don’t keep our server protection at a fever pitch. But what to do? Over the years I’ve grown quite fond of mail siphon, a handy little Mac OSX based app that allows you to peek into a server’s waiting e-mail list and delete stuff you don’t want (without downloading via your e-mail client). I’ve always found this method to be easier and more accurate than automated solutions. But, holy crap – take a look at this weekends catch (screen cap above). 563 messages and only a very small percentage of them legit (I’ve highlighted the ‘real’ messages in yellow and yes, that really is 5.9 MBs of wonderful, glorious spam patiently awaiting to de downloaded). Just like your kind selves, a lot of our spam deals with Viagra sales and while I generally write spam off as a very ineffective way of marketing, Modern Rubbish takes a look how viagra spam works and theorize that there may be big money behind those annoying e-mails. Of particular aggravation is that In this weekend’s catch there was a ton of what could only be described as ‘logo design spam’ – some outfit from Russia flooding our servers with ads for their company – a portion of which I’ve also focused on. Spammer dudes – what chance do you think that a logo design company would have use for your services? (I’ll go out on a limb and offer not too much). Now, spammers are starting to auto-ack the comments form of Logopalooza with comment spam. Cleaned up 36 fake post comments this morning (embedded with all sorts of questionable and XXX links). Unfortunately, that means that I’ll have to queue comments and hold them for moderation. So, if your comment doesn’t appear right away – worry not. I’ll get around to reading it very shortly…
