world cup 2010 logo

Pretty funny stuff. Bunch of designers from South Africa, ticked off at being excluded from the bidding for the design of the logo for the 2010 FIFA World Cup, have started up a web site called Not the 2010 Logo. From the site:

This website was created simply as a portal for designers who felt that they were unjustly excluded from the opportunity to design an emblem or logo for the 2010 World Cup. Many designers feel that the current logo is not a good reflection of SA design and this website affords them the opportunity to submit their own creations. Your logo will not become the official logo by any means, but you can win some great prizes for your efforts and become recognised as creating the best unofficial logo. Do you think you can design a better logo? PROVE IT!!

Some fairly decent entries so far. This site admits to being inspired by 11 Designer, a group of German designers who were similarly distressed at being left out of the bidding for the 2006 FIFA World Cup and launched a similar protest site in 2003. While the 2010 logo (pictured above right) isn’t terribly bad (if not particularly clever either) the logo for the 2006 World Cup (bunch o’ smiley faces) left me completely non-plussed. In any case, seems like designers in South Africa take their sports logos very seriously.

World Cup logo protest from Africa

A bunch of African designers are pissed for being excluded from the loop of graphically profiling the 2010 FIFA World Cup, scheduled to be hosted in South Africa. They started a site called Not The 2010 Logo. This is pretty funny and interesting.
