Record label – Diversity Records & Recording Label logo.
Behind the Design Scenes: When creating entertainment logos, our designers generally have to ignore the cut-throat nature of the industry, and focus more on the positive aspect of the business we’re trying to brand. When we were developing a brand image for the Diversity Records record label logo, we avoided a complex treatment, focusing instead on a simple iconic approach. Our design staff came up with a simplified icon representing someone listening to music through earphones, with simple sound waves emanating outward. While this is a fairly typical approach to such a music logo, the execution is what makes this mark unique. Using a ‘stressed’ font (see our font and typography area for more information) added a rough-hewn dimension to the design (hopefully, making it appeal to the target audience). Instead of using a ‘woo-hoo’ color scheme, our designers opted for a more muted combination of black and silver – adding a serious element to an image that ran the risk of being trite if colored incorrectly (see the Music Cellar for another). This was certainly not the first business logo we had created featuring a music listener wearing headphones, and it certainly wasn’t the last. (See Steve Dahl Radio Show and the similarly themed design for Radio Station 88.1 for others, illustrating how similar business designs can be developed in a completely different direction). See Sinister Muse for another example of record labels and their brands.
