Behind the Design Scenes: For the vast majority of the examples in our logo design portfolio, we feature logos that are the final version of the particular study or example. In other instances, we may select to preview a logo that ended up on the ‘reject pile’. Such is the case with i-compass who chose to utilize a logo other than the one previewed here (the logo featured above was one of the preliminary designs – the client was later to select the logo that can be seen on their web site – also designed by The Logo Factory). When icompass came to The Logo Factory, their original brief outlined that the company wanted an ‘unorthodox’ compass – not the run-of-the-mill version that is so common on logos everywhere. Our designers took the brief to task and developed a series of compass ‘themes’ – one of which is featured in this case study. While the client liked the direction, they worried that the designs were too ‘trendy’ for their market – mostly small to mid sized business owners. One of icompass’ main functions is that of a communications consultant and felt that the flat version of the compass (with ‘eye’ graphic) might alienate their market. Not a problem. Our designers scrapped the preliminaries and came up with a more typical rendering – one that the client and (hopefully) their market could be happy with. That left us with the version you see here – it remains our favorite – that, if it wasn’t for this ‘classics’ gallery, would have remained collecting digital dust.
