The illustration above is a classic example of an illustrative logo treatment (see here for the pros and cons of illustrative logos, see here for the anatomy of a similar project) and part of a recent corporate identity workup for Papa's Sports Lounge & Casino, a Las Vegas sports lounge & casino (you can read more about the project here). While it's often important that the character portrayed in a logo actually looks like the individual being portrayed (Steve Dahl and Music City Real Estate are two examples), sometimes it's just as important how the character looks and the kind of image he (or she) will portray. In the case of Papa's, the client didn't want his pirate to 'look' like anyone in particular, but wanted a character that was "not to appear menacing, nor 'too friendly, or too 'cartoon'. Not as hard as it sounds - through a series of character studies and rough sketches, our designers were able to hone in on the version you see above, a fairly nondescript, almost cartoon character, that fit the client's requirements. Once the illustration is completed, it's simply a matter of adding text and complimentary graphics.
