Logo Brief: When it comes to showcasing our work, we generally try to feature only the finalized logos designs on our website. Trouble is, sometimes some of our rejected concept designs are (in our opinion) more appealing, for one reason or another, than the design ultimately chosen by the client. Not trying to say the client is wrong, per se – it is always their choice as the brand that represents their company – but that the designs originally worked by our logo designers appealed to us from a visual point of view, but weren’t up-to-snuff for the client ’s particular needs.
Here’s one such example – the design for One Touch, a salon product and supply company, where the preliminary design (above) was ultimately rejected for a more typical concept (below). In my humble opinion, the logo above has more unique character – a retro-flavored design that attempted to recreate the ‘beauty parlor atmosphere’ of days gone by (the reason that the design was ultimately deep-sixed). I love the combined font work (Bounce), the slight ‘gel’ treatment (without being over done) held within a background shield visual which ties everything together nicely.
You might be surprised at the tens of thousands of concepts and ideas that, for one reason or another, never made the light of day and are collecting digital dust on our studio network (you can download some of our rejected Morgue Files here). The final logo selected for this project is the version you see here. Consisting of a fairly decent graphic of a female figure, this generic approach was viewed as being more adaptable for use in a wide range of product logos and thus more suitable for day-to-day use. Combined with a dynamic script font, this is still an effective logo by any account despite our leaning towards the version at top. Besides, you know what they say about the customer being right…
