About: A logo design for Sweet Spot, an ice cream parlor, candy, coffee and gift shoppe, located on an island off the North Carolina coast. Brand includes cartoon style dolphin mascot.

Logo Brief: Cartoon logos are certainly not for everybody, and their development must be tailored very carefully to the market and theme of the business or company depicted. In the case of Sweet Spot, a illustrative/cartoon logo is entirely appropriate, especially when considering the market segment and the services offered.

Original buzz words listed in the project brief included “colorful, retro, tropical and friendly”. As the retail location is situated in a holiday resort, the marketing material needed to appeal to a wide segment of the tourist market – young and old – and needed to stand out visually against some pretty heavy-duty competition. After seeing a similarly themed logo design in our galleries, the client had requested a dolphin as the central character of the design. Accordingly, our designers worked up some initial dolphin character sketches, and varied poses, before going to digital rendering with the version shown here. Products were added and subtracted until we settled on an ice cream cone and cup of java. A bold retro font and vibrant colors were selected to stand out on some of the primary logo usage – signage and sandwich boards outside the shop.
