Copycats - Logo Design Examples.

It's often said that you're only as good as your last gig. That's particularly true of the design industry where a studio or designer is only as good as what they're able to prove. That task rests with their design portfolio, where showcased work tells potential clients 'hey, I designed this, I can design something like it for you'. Or, at least, that's how it's supposed to work. Sometimes it's more like 'hey, The Logo Factory designed this. I can still design something like if for you'....

Of course I can design a logo like this. I didn't. But I can...

Copied logos"Of course we're experienced in logo design! Haven't you checked out our portfolio?"

It's a pretty safe bet that if you're advertising logo design services, your prospective clients want to see examples of YOUR logo designers - not that of The Logo Factory. After all, if they want TLF level design, they probably want to go with the original. Nobody told it to the good folks at Tefiret.ca, whose two (only) examples of THEIR logo design are BOTH designs created by The Logo Factory (oh, and the description text is a blatant rip from our web site to boot).

Knock offs on elance"Copied? Nope. Totally original"

Our team at The Logo Factory are very proud of our logo design galleries. They represent over a decade of our work, tens of thousands of man hours, and the resultant experience we've gained creating thousands of logos for clients all over the world. It SHOULD be an accurate calling card for a design agency. But on the Internet, especially bidding sites (with their relative anonymity) you can never be sure IF the designs that are being previewed are a true barometer of the skills claimed. Take this outfit on a well known bid for services site. Nice little pop ups with wonderful logo design. Trouble is, at least 4 are NOT theirs. How do we know? Ahm, cause we designed all of them, including one way back in 1996.

Copy with originalPortfolio a-go-go

The Logo Factory has one of the most extensive online galleries on these webby things, and with our experience in almost evey industry imaginable, it shouldn't be a surprise that we're among the most imitated around. Folks will find that when it comes to protecting our client's intellectual property, we're less than understanding. Ticks off the kids at the studio too.

"If we change the name, nobody will notice..."

At The Logo Factory, we take great pride in our design work, striving on a daily basis to create imaginative, original designs. In order to educate site visitors, and prospective clients, often newcomers to the corporate identity arena, we try to be as free as we can with info, design examples and logo design information. Naturally, this leads some to take advantage, and we often find that startup logo design companies (without established clients and portfolio) populate their web sites with designs that look suspiciously similar to material that we have produced. Copies and originalThese logos are presented as 'real-world' examples meaning one of two things - B) they're not 'real world' examples but made up or B) the company in question has managed to pass off to their unsuspecting client a logo that at very least is confusing. At the very worst, a trademark or copyright infringement. In either case, it seems that their logo designers are lacking in confidence in their own abilities, and turn to The Logo Factory for, ahem, inspiration.
But how can you expect to receive the level of design proficiency shown on these web sites, if they must resort to 'borrowing' design examples from someone else?

Eagle software knockoffAn eagle is an eagle, is an eagle, etc.

Never know if copycats are assembling a portfolio with 'pretend' logos because of inexperience, or, they're showing examples of ripped work that they've actually passed on to some poor client. Something to keep in mind though - the same web tools they used to find us, we use to find them. As we did with some outfit called Storm Logos who thought our eagle software logo was so nice, they made it their own.

Of course I can design a logo like this. I didn't. But I can...

The Logo Factory library"What's the problem. The design's only a bunch of boxes anyway!"

What part of 'copyright' do some folks have a problem with? This logo featured boxes that looked remarkably like the icon from Kekus Digital - a logo designed by The Logo Factory in 2001 (actually, they're identical - we're being charitable). The web site is gone now, so whether the logo is a real design, passed of to some unsuspecting client, or a fake logo to trumpet their (faux) experience, we'll never know.

Of course I can design a logo like this. I didn't. But I can...

The Logo Factory library"We didn't copy this! The name's different. Ah-ha - so's the color!"

This one is a real classic. When this company put Silver Crown Clothing logo on their portfolio section, we took umbrage. After all, The Logo Factory had designed that logo design in 1991. A quick cease & desist letter was fired off, and within ten minutes, the logo had changed to Gold Crown. Same icon. Same font. Different name. Oh yeah, that makes a difference to the copyright legal beagles.

Ebay knock offsWhat?!! They're selling them on ebay too?!!

Business owners turning to auction site Ebay for logo design services was always a little perplexing. Not that we've anything against Ebay itself and have been, at many times, enthusiastic Ebay shoppers. Logo design auctions seemed, at the risk of sounding snobby or elitist, a tad unseemly. Other than the opportunity of getting a so-called ‘logo’ for a low-bid price, what would be the real benefit to the ‘client’? Alas, probably none. Hell, you can’t even be sure that the ‘designer’ you’re dealing has the graphic bona fides they’re boasting.

Over the years, we’ve been involved in a constant cat-and-mouse game with supposed ‘designers’ who pinch logo samples off our site, throw them up on an Ebay auction page, and hoist a shingle offering ‘professional logo design’ services. Comes with the usual online logo design malarkey - unlimited revisions, etc, etc. Read more about ebay logo auctions on our blog.
