There are many reasons why people are, ahm, 'inspired' by others. Most of the time it has to do with money and skill. When it's about money, the web site is trying to sell logo design services cheaper than their competitors. The budget on their cut-rate pricing doesn't allow the services of a professional designer, so they, ahm. 'borrow' ideas from the pros to shave time and expense. Or the freelance designers who work 'behind the scenes' of these companies are a little ticked at getting paid peanuts for their work, and may get a little 'over-zealous' when hunting for ideas around the Internet. Maybe it's because the people behind this or that web site don't possess the necessary skill or talent to begin with. Starting a 'logo design' web site looked like a good money-making idea at first. Trouble is, after playing around with various design software packages, they found out that great design is not just a matter of downloading a version of Adobe Illustrator and going 'to town'. It requires skills that are honed after years of experience. With a hefty sprinkling of talent thrown in for good measure.
There's other reasons too - many 'logo design firms' have a ton of web sites scattered about the Internet and these sites gobble up copy, text and logo design articles like there's no tomorrow. Writing material takes know-how and time, so it's always easer to cut and paste material from somewhere else. Helps if the material is search engine friendly too. Same goes for so-called logo design templates - hard to crank out your own stuff at such a clip, all the while charging next to nothing.
Over the years we've found tons of our material showing up on logo design web sites that, to be charitable, we didn't own. Some pretty subtle. Some so blatant as to be hilarious. We grew tired of sending 'cease & desist' letters, so decided to feature some of this stuff in a Copycats Gallery. At the very least, it's worth a few giggles. So, without further adieu, we present The Logo Factory Copycats Gallery. Enjoy..

Copycats - Logo Design templates
The notion that you can pay for, download and use a 'logo design template' is goofy to begin with. After all, isn't the idea of having a logo created all about being original and not about 'time-sharing' your new corporate brand with hundreds of other people? Yeah, we think so too. Now, what if the templates you're looking at aren't original in the first place, but 'borrowed' without permish from someone else? That takes that goofy notion into a whole different ball game. Copycats - Logo Design examples
It's often said that you're only as good as your last gig. That's particularly true of the design industry where a studio is only as good as what they're able to prove. That would be their design portfolio where showcased work tells potential clients 'hey, I designed this, I can design something like it for you'. Or, at least, that's how it's supposed to work. Sometimes it's more like 'hey, The Logo Factory designed this. I can still design something like if for you'. (more) |

Copycats - Logo Design contests
Ah yes. The Logo Design Contest. Where a whole bunch of designers submit designs in hope that you'll pick (and pay for) their design. As many of these contests often take place anonymously on Internet forums, folks don't have a lot invested, so there's little motivation to be 'straight up'. What if someone entered a logo in a contest that belonged to someone else, and that logo happened to win the whole shebang? It's happened. More than once that we know of. (more) |

Copycats - It's all in the name
And finally, from the 'nice name, mind if we use it?' category. Can't count the number of times that folks have hung out a shingle and called themselves The Logo Factory, despite the fact that our name (as well as our 'house' are registered trademarks with whatever protection that offers. People even use The Logo Factory name to 'lure' people to their sites using search engines. Kid you not. (more) |

Copying logos is never cool.
Be original! While our Copycat reports are featured as somewhat tongue in cheek, there is nothing funny about ripping off someone else's work to present as your own, or worse, sell it to some unsuspecting client. If anyone chooses to rip off our, or our client's material, we will find out. And we will take all legal steps necessary to protect our, and our client's property. We may also publish a report in our Copycats section.
